Home and commercial repair guides for New York City
Each page answers what usually breaks, what a planning estimate looks like, and what to ask before you hire. Ranges are estimates, not Fixt quotes. In-person Fixt bids use New York ZIP codes 100–149. You pay the winning bid. There is no homeowner fee.
Home repairs
- PlumbingMost plumbing visits start with a leak, a running toilet, or a drain that will not clear.
- ElectricalOutlet, switch, and lighting jobs are the common calls. Panel and new-circuit work needs a permit conversation before anyone opens the cover.
- HVACNo cooling or no heat usually starts with the filter, the thermostat, the condensate drain, or a failed capacitor, not a full system replacement.
- RoofingAn active leak needs containment and photos. A small flashing or shingle repair is a different job from a full replacement.
- Appliance repairA dead fridge, a washer that will not drain, or a dishwasher leak is usually a diagnostic plus one part. Ask for a repair-versus-replace number before you approve a sealed system.
- HandymanA handyman visit fits a short list of small repairs: doors, drywall patches, caulk, and fixture swaps. It is the wrong call for a panel, a gas line, or a structural wall.
Commercial and restaurant
- Walk-in coolersA warm walk-in is a food-safety clock. Log the box temperature, check the door gasket and the evaporator ice, and say whether product is still in the safe range.
- Restaurant equipmentFryers, dish machines, and reach-ins fail in ways a nameplate and a symptom photo can narrow before a tech rolls.
- Commercial HVACA rooftop unit that is down at open is usually a filter, a belt, a condensate overflow, or a failed contactor. Confirm roof access before you post.
- Grease traps and drainsA slow pot sink is often the under-sink trap or the line to it. Pumping a large outdoor interceptor is a different job from snaking a floor drain.
- Hood and exhaustA weak hood is often loaded baffle filters, a loose belt, or make-up air that is not tracking the fan. Duct cleaning and suppression inspections are separate scheduled work.
- Commercial refrigerationReach-ins and ice machines are the daily failures. A dirty condenser or a scaled ice machine is the first check before a sealed-system quote.
- Commercial plumbingRestaurant plumbing calls cluster on the pre-rinse, the dish machine, the water heater or booster, and floor drains. Say which fixture failed.
- Commercial electricalA tripped kitchen circuit, a dead dining-room light, or a new dedicated circuit for a piece of equipment are the usual store calls. Panel work needs a permit conversation.
